Tropikos

Opening: It’s All About The River Festival / River Tamar Project October 2015

Single channel HD colour video, 5.1 sound 36 minutes 41 seconds

Director: John Akomfrah

Producers: Lina Gopaul and David Lawson

Filmed on the River Tamar, Plymouth and surrounding areas, Tropikos is set during the 16 th century, England’s bold and daring ‘age of discovery’ in which voyages to the ‘New World’ and Africa were becoming more frequent.

Exploring how we encountered the ‘other’, Tropikos juxtaposes the experience of the people, cultures and landscapes of Africa and Britain which through the slave trade and its subsequent abolition, have formed a disparate yet shared heritage.

Based on testimonials and first hand narratives, Tropikos follows a series of overlapping stories interweaving audio and poetic readings to create a reimagining of some of the first British encounters with peoples of Africa.
